Fly Fisherman Lands Record Tarpon off Marathon, Florida

A fly fisherman in Marathon, Florida, has set a new world record for tarpon caught on a fly rod. The gigantic tarpon was landed by 65-year-old Bob Spada after a 20 minute battle on the water.An experienced angler, Spada said he was using a nine weight rod with an 8-pound tippet when he hooked the fish.

"I saw the fish come up and I made my cast," said Spada. "The fight was on from there."

Spada fought the fish for over 20 minutes before finally landing it boat side.Weighing in at 176 pounds, the tarpon breaks the previous world record of 170 pounds, 12 ounces, caught by Garry Singer in Islamorada, Florida in 2010.
